Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming to Netflix in September
Here’s a look at the best movies coming to Netflix in September. We got a couple Spielberg classics, one of 2016’s best films, as good of a documentary that has ever been made, and an original T.V. show that I am ecstatic for.
You can see all the movies coming to Netflix by clicking right here.
5 – MAN ON WIRE (James Marsh, 2008)
Man on Wire tells the story of French tight-rope walker Philipe Petite and his incredibly daring and illegal stunt to walk between New York City’s World Trade Center twin towers. This story was given a narrative treatment last year with The Walk, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and directed by Robert Zemeckis. While that film is pretty good, especially the vertigo-inducing walk, this documentary is extraordinary. It launches you right into the mind of Petite and the insanity of this stunt. They perfectly mix archival footage with dramatizations, especially seeing footage of the actual walk across the towers. Watch this movie and be in awe.
4 – ZOOTOPIA (Byron Howard, Richard Moore, 2016)
Disney’s latest deal with Netflix is the greatest thing to happen to Netflix since it started it’s streaming service. Zootopia being available for streaming just seven months after it was released in theaters is a gift. This is one of the most original animated movies I have seen in a long time, Pixar included. It is a wickedly smart noir about a rookie bunny cop (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) who teams up with a sly fox (Jason Bateman) to uncover a conspiracy going on in their seemingly perfect city. More than just a brightly colored, hilarious, and fun kids movie, Zootopia is layered with themes of racism, classism, politics, and corruption. You can check out my full review right here, but this is one of the best movies of 2016.
3 – JAWS (Steven Spielberg, 1975)
What more can be said about Jaws? This is a true cinematic masterpiece and the movie that invented the blockbuster. This is also the film that really launched Steven Spielberg’s career, which is one of the finest careers in all of cinema. From its impeccable filmmaking, to great acting, to John William’s iconic score, this movie is perfect on every level. I’m not going to waste your time much longer on Jaws. If haven’t seen it, stop reading this and watch it now. If you have, continue reading, but watch it right after.
2 – SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (Steven Spielberg, 1998)
Great Spielberg Movie: Take Two. This harrowing look at one WWII infantry’s attempt to save a solider in the heart of German territory is one of the most realistic war movies I have ever seen. This is probably Spielberg’s best effort as a director. Just watch the opening Normandy invasion and tell me you didn’t feel like you were there. It’s all-star cast, technical brilliance, and emotional power all come together to give us the full experience. Saving Private Ryan is a seminal piece of filmmaking and the greatest war movie of all-time.
1 – LUKE CAGE (Cheo Hodari Coker, 2016)
A T.V. show at number one? Whaaaaaaat? The Marvel Cinematic Universe on the small screen is amazing. Daredevil season one (2015) and two (2016) are both masterful and Jessica Jones (2015) could be argued is even better. Luke Cage is the next entry in this Defenders series and it looks just as awesome. I don’t know a lot about the character of Luke Cage (Mike Colter). It looks like he has super-strength and is almost indestructible, but that’s all I got. All I know is that Daredevil and Jessica Jones are two of the best things Marvel has ever done, especially during their recent run of cookie-cutter films, and I expect Luke Cage to be no different.
